summer-moving-tips

The summer months are the busy season for moving companies, and it’s easy to see why. School is out, and you don’t have to worry about snow delays—but you do have to think about ways to stay cool during a warm-weather move.

We know a thing or two about that.

Daniel’s Moving & Storage has provided commercial and residential relocations since 1978, and we’ve logged millions of miles—many during the summer. Our experienced movers have put together our top tips for staying comfortable even on the hottest days.

Dress for the Weather

When dressing for moving day, consider both the weather and your safety. You’ll need to wear closed-toed shoes and gloves for safety and lightweight fabrics that help you stay cool. Also, wear sunscreen and consider wearing a hat to protect against sunburn.

Stay Hydrated

Whether you’re completing a DIY move or working with a moving company, ensure there is plenty of water hand for everyone helping with the move.

Make Plans for Pets and Kids

Pets get overheated faster than people. Another danger on moving day is a pet slipping out of a propped-open door. Make plans to send your pet to daycare to keep him cool and safe.

If possible, have your small kids spend the day with a friend or family member so that they can be in a cool environment. This is especially important on particularly hot days.

Keep the Indoor Environment as Cool as Possible

Your HVAC system will be working overtime with all the opening and closing of doors, so run some fans to help keep the temperature down. Also, turn the utilities on the day after you move out and the day before you move in. If possible, have someone turn on the AC in the new place before you arrive.

Stay Cool on the Drive

If you’re driving a vehicle a long distance, be sure the AC is in good working order before you get on the road. It’s also a good idea to have the vehicle serviced and to check coolant levels to prevent overheating.

Don’t Be a Hero

It doesn’t matter what shape you’re in; you shouldn’t overdo it on a hot day. Taking frequent breaks and staying hydrated will help you not overexert yourself.

Hire the Professionals

Hiring experienced movers is, for many, the best way to handle a summer move. Skilled professionals know how to deal with the heat, so you won’t have to!
